Powerpoints

Thursday, 28 April 2011

I have set out the slides that I will be discussing. As I am opening the presentation it is more about setting up the presentation then images and such. I will firstly be discussing the overview of the company and what we intend to create, and I will be doing this through the VMOS strategy.
On the powerpoint I intend to only show the overview so far and then i will discuss it much further. The powerpoint will just be a reference point at this moment, so people can read it and it makes sense. I put a basic script for me together the other day and this is what I will be saying:

Our vision for this company would be to create a Hi end print company that covers design for print and everything that entails. We want to create a company that clients can rely on and trust to produce the highest quality design work. Our mission for the company is to be the top design for print agency in Leeds promoting the importance of client relationships and well thought out and produced work. Our objectives would be to create to that reputation over a five-year period. Our strategy would be to compete on the design for print market, offering quality service, a 10% discount to prospective clients working through a contract agreed basis. We will be concentrating on the commercial market, providing companies with a wide range of sophisticated design work.

The next slide I will be discussing is the premises slide, this is because I did the research into it and found the best place that we all agreed on. Ailsa and I thought it would be best for me to give an overview and then Ailsa would talk about the figures, that way it links to her work with the finance part of the company. Again I have kept my slide minimal because its really all about the images and what the represent, as I will be talking about it further in the presentation:

Our company premises would be in Wellington Place which is situated to the south of the centre of Leeds, making it a 10 minute commute from Leeds train station and within easy access to the inner City ring road. We chose this location because when looking  at other successful companies they were easily accessed by transport links and based to the southern side of Leeds. As for the premises they provide large open plan offices that can easily be altered to fit our studio needs as well as having room for meeting and greeting clients.

Presentation Plan

Wednesday, 27 April 2011

We got together today to discuss how we would put our presentation together. We already have quite a lot of information and the delegation that happened over easter has really helped us focus our work and what we needed to do. We all agreed the best idea would be to firstly, make sure everyone had an equal say and secondly for everyone to discuss the areas with which they had researched, that way we are all informed. So that worked out as:

Nick - Discussing Finance, legalities and projections for the on coming years
Ailsa - Discussing all the Financial side, incorporating all the separate areas discussed
Sai - Discussing the Marketing side, and the Competitors (Although I researched this section, it's because I had two sections and Sai only had and we wanted it to be equal)
Me - VMOS, Premises

This meant that everything was covered in a coherent way and everyone was getting the fair representation they deserved. So the next stage is to work out what everyone is going to be saying by assembling a small script and then to put everything together. I think it's better to put together a well thought out and rehearsed presentation instead of just standing up and winging it. I think its important to be clear and to the point instead of just talking.

POPCORN - Feedback

Tuesday, 26 April 2011

Today I had a phone conversation with Popcorns Creative Director James Graham. He really liked my portfolio and defiantly wants me to do a placement with them over the summer, he's wasn't sure about the times or what months were best but he's going away for a week and he said after that he would give me a ring with the best times to come down.

Yey though..!

This is my email that i sent to popcorn via my sister and her boss. I had to send a copy to them first in order for it to be passed on.

POPCORN

Thursday, 21 April 2011

Popcorn are a young and fresh team of innovative graphic designers, they specialize in branding, type, editorial and packaging. This is one of the main reasons i would like to work alongside them. They are a small studio which will guarantee me some hands on time with them, and it means i will be able to see the functions of a small design practice. They are also in london, which means i can visit other studios while i'm there which would be great. I would really love to work alongside popcorn, because there work really appeals to me its clean sophisticated and still very new.

Contacts

Tuesday, 19 April 2011

I have spent a lot of time talking with my sister, who works in London for SlamPR and discussing my placements etc. So she has helped me get into contact with the design agencies she works with and some of her close friends who are graphic designers. I have had to create a new covering letter that would go alongside my portfolio so it would help illustrate me more and what I am capable of. This was from the advice of my sister and her boss (who also checked out my work), and her designer friends.
This has really helped me because it has put more structure to the people I am trying to get into contact with.
Here is the revised cover letter I have sent to the companies in London

My name is Robyn Russell.

I am a Graphic Design student currently in my second year at Leeds College of Art and I am currently averaging a  2:1.

I am writing to you with regards to a short term summer placement, a week or two, anywhere between the end of June to the middle of August. I have previously interned for a graphic design team local to my hometown, Creative Design http://www.gagraphics.co.uk/.

I have now amassed a varied skill base including a good understanding of design software such as :

·         Illustrator
·         In-Design
·         Photoshop
·         Quark
·         After Effects
·         Dreamweaver

My passion lies in package design, branding and any print based media and my work tends to focus on experimentation with type and layout.

I would relish the opportunity to work alongside a professional team, such as yourselves, in order to further my experience in the design industry.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Robyn Russell

New portfolio

I have updated my portfolio, retaking some images and adding some new work that I have done over the easter break. Because i now know I want to work with type and layout, its been important to show these are the aspects that I am interested in. So I have added work that I have done for the Type module.
